Dog Training Hand Signals – Learn How to Train a Dog Using Hand Signals

Learning how to perform dog training with hand signals can be tricky. Mainly, hand signals are used in conjunction with words. It is much easier to train a dog with these after they are trained with words. The methods I am going to share with you pertain to vocally trained dogs, and also dogs with no training what-so-ever.

Teaching to Sit

Teaching a dog how to sit using dog training hand signals is a fairly simple technique. You should get a treat and hold it out in front of their nose. If the dog already knows how to sit by voice, then you won’t need to use food. Now, with your hand in front of their nose, begin to move it towards the back of their head. If they are vocally trained, this is the time where you should say “sit.” If they aren’t trained, they will bend their head backwards following the food, and you should say sit. Every time you say sit, put your hand out in front of their faces after training them with food for a while. They will begin to realize that when you put your hand out in front of them it means sit.

Teaching to Lay Down

First you will have to teach the “sit” dog training hand signal. Then, once the pooch is sitting, bring your hand, with or without food, out in front of their nose again. While saying lay down, move your hand down towards the ground so they follow it into a laying position. Obviously, they will learn that when you move your hand from eye level, to the floor, it means lay down.

Now that I have taught you two simple dog training hand signals, you can begin coming up with your own. Just remember, you need to practice often with your pet so they learn fast! The key is to build trust.
